Organic Basil - Sweet Genovese
This is the standard culinary variety, a half hardy annual that grows to 40cm. It is an aromatic herb which has many culinary uses, especially in Mediterranean dishes. It features large spoon-shaped aromatic leaves of bright green colour.
Sow indoors in March/April, 0.5cm deep, in separate pots if possible. Then plant out in late May, spacing 30cm apart. Alternatively, sow outdoors in drills in May, and then thin to 30cm spacing. Basil thrives in rich, well-drained soil, in a warm sheltered position. Pick the leaves as required, which are best used fresh. Pinch out the tip of the main stem to encourage bushy growth or prevent plants from flowering.
