Petunia - Sparklers
T&M is proud to bring you the first ever star-shaped petunia from seed. A white version of this uniquely-shaped flower was originally sent to us by a customer, Edward Cragen, from Kent in 1998. After 10 years of breeding and many generations of selection, the perfect star shape was obtained as well as this fabulous range of colours. Sparklers also differs from a typical petunia in that its leaves are pointed rather than rounded.
Sow seed on the surface of good, free-draining, seed compost. Cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator, or seal container inside a polythene bag and place at a temperature of 20-25C until after germination which takes 10-21 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost into containers 15-30cm apart. As plants grow train each stem through the climbing frame supports. Feed regularly in containers and remove dead blooms as they fade to extend the flowering period.
