Title

Sea kale has large, wavy-edged, bluish-green leaves that form a rosette close to the ground. The leaves are fleshy and succulent.

Sea kale is cultivated not only for its ornamental value but also for its edible qualities. The young shoots and leaves are harvested and can be cooked in a manner similar to asparagus. The taste is mild and slightly sweet.

Germination Instructions

  • Place sea kale seeds on the soil surface, spacing them about 1-2 inches apart.
  • Press the seeds lightly into the soil. Do not cover them; sea kale seeds require light to germinate.
  • Cover the trays or pots with plastic wrap or a clear plastic dome to create a humid environment.
  • This helps to simulate the coastal conditions sea kale prefers.
  • Sea kale seeds usually germinate in 2-4 weeks. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Once germination occurs, remove the plastic covering.
  • When the seedlings have grown large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden if the outdoor conditions are suitable.
  • Choose a well-drained location with full sun or partial shade.
  • Ensure the soil is enriched with organic matter.
  • Space sea kale plants about 2-3 feet apart.
