Rhubarb - Glaskins Perpetual
Rhubarb is really easy to grow, and well worth the effort. Glaskins Perpetual is a very quick growing variety, producing bright red sticks with a fine flavour over a long period of time. It is very easy to grow from seed in any odd corner of the garden and tastes absolutely delicious in a crumble, tarts and jams.
Sow from April to May in in trays in a cold frame or in a seed bed 1cm deep. When seedlings are about 15cm tall, transplant to permanent site, with the spacing of about 75cm apart. As soon as young shoots show at the beginning of the year, cover some plants with a bucket or upturned pot to produce an early crop. Do not weaken the plant by taking too many stems for the first two seasons. Avoid the leaves as they are poisonous.
