Primrose - Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is a hardy perennial, which produces a lovely bright range of flowers on bright green foliage. The plant has a compact habit with flowers held well above the leaves.
Sow from May to July on the surface of lightly firmed seed compost in pots or trays. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20°C. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination will usually take 14-30 days. As soon as you see the seeds start to chit (germinate), lightly cover them with vermiculite. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions in a cold frame or sheltered part of the garden for a few weeks before planting out in the autumn in borders spaced 15cm apart or plant into containers for autumn/spring colour. Flowers from March to May the following year.
