Oriental Vegetables - Perilla Red
Perilla Red produces showy deep purple-red leaves that have a pleasant curry-like aroma. You can use the young leaves and flower stalks for salads, in soups or as a vegetable. You can also use it to add a kick of flavour to fish when it is cooking. It will impart its colours to pickles.
Sow under protection in spring or outside in early summer in drills 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart. Thin to 20cm apart nipping out growing points to obtain a bushy plant.
