Asparagus Pea
Â
Introduced in 1590, the asparagus pea is an unusual vegetable, with brilliant scarlet flowers. Pick the pods when they're young and tender.
Sow in drills 2cm deep in April-June in situ, 2 seeds per station, with 35cm between rows. Can be sowed earlier under cloches or in pots and planted out after hardening off.
To cook, just top and tail the pods, steam or lightly boil and serve with a knob of butter
