Turnip - Purple Top Milan
This variety produces attractive, flattened, purple topped roots with a white base. It is quick maturing, in under 7 weeks from sowing, during the summer. It is delicious and tender as 'baby roots' for salads and as a cooked vegetable. The leaves can be steamed as 'turnip top greens'.
Before sowing, prepare the ground by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Make shallow channels (drills) in the soil 30cm apart. Sow thinly in the drills or scatter seed on the surface of the compost in 15cm deep troughs. Lightly cover the seed with soil or compost. Thin out the plants to about 2.5-5cm apart. Keep the plants cool and moist to prevent running to seed.
