Organic Runner Bean – Scarlet Emperor
Red flowered Runner Bean 'Scarlet Emperor' produces heavy crops of smooth textured, dark-green pods, each reaching 30-37cm in length. This variety is excellent for freezing and for exhibition. Runner beans are a good source of Vitamin C, folate and iron, and have a high fibre content. Height: 3m. Spread: 30cm.
Sow from May to July outdoors, directly into rich, well prepared soil in a sunny spot. Provide support for climbing habit, either a row or wigwam of 180cm canes or netting, sow 2 seeds against each cane, 4cm deep. Seeds can also be sown individually in small pots or cells under glass at 18-20C from mid April to transplant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Keep watered, particularly once flowering commences, adding a mulch during hottest, dry periods. Pick pods regularly whilst young for heaviest yields and to extend the season.
