Turnip - Purple Top Milan
This variety features quick maturing, pretty, flattened roots with a purple crown and white base. The white flesh is firm but tender, delicately sweet, and ideal grated or sliced in salads. The short, erect leaves can be steamed as 'greens'.
Sow from February to March in frames / under glass, or from April to August outdoors, at 4 week intervals. Sow thinly, 1cm deep in drills, 30cm apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Water ground regularly, especially during dry periods. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 5-7cm apart. Keep plants cool and moist to prevent plants running to seed. It is quick maturing, from 40 days from sowing.
