Antirrhinum - Magic Carpet
This is a great summer ground cover to banish those weeds for good! It was a favourite when I was a child, I couldn’t get enough of the small snapdragon blooms, opening and closing them like little puppets in my hand!
Sow Antirrhinum seeds indoors or under glass from January to March on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 10 - 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet and do not exclude light. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm pots and grow Snapdragon plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Snapdragons at a distance of 30cm apart on any light, well-drained soil in full sun. Feed and water regularly until snapdragons are fully established. Deadhead faded snapdragon flowers frequently throughout summer to encourage more blooms to be produced.
