Echinops - Ruthenicus
Tight clusters of deep blue flowers form mini-globes on long, strong straight stems of pure silver. The foliage is amazing and quite unique, giving off a silver sheen whatever the weather. This incredibly ornamental in or out of flower is an all-round superb species with ideal height.
Sow from late winter to spring in a good seed compost just covering the seed with compost and gently firm down compost and seal inside a polythene bag after sowing. Germination usually takes 10-20 days at 20-25C. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 1-15 days before planting out, after all risk of frost, 6cm apart in a sunny spot on light well drained soil.
