Choose an open, sunny weed-free site with freedraining soil. Fork over the soil, removing weeds and break down large clumps of earth. Don’t add manure or fertiliser, as ildflowers grow best in less fertile soils. Rake to achieve a fine, crumbly texture. Scatter seed lightly on the soil surface. Sowing in rows 20cm (8in) apart will help you identify and remove weeds - the artificial effect will be lost as plants mature. Do not cover the seed. Water gently and keep the site moist until the seedlings are established. Remove weeds carefully. lants can be cut down when they have set seed, providing food for wildlife and new plants for your garden.
