Runner Bean - Polestar
This is a British bred, gardeners' favourite for high yields and reliability. The early to flower, vigorous plants produce clusters of 25cm stringless fleshy pods of good flavour throughout the season.
Sow indoors in trays or pots or direct sow outdoors. For indoors sowing fill seed trays or pots with good seed compost. Alternatively, for outdoors sowing, prepare the soil by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Sow mid-April to May indoors for transplanting. Sow in 7.5cm pots, 4cm deep. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at around 18-20C until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Can also be sown direct outdoors May to early July once the soil has warmed, 15cm apart, 5cm deep and in rows 45cm apart. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before planting out after all risk of frost against support such as canes or netting. Hoe regularly and keep plants well-watered. Mulch during dry periods.
