Climbing Bean - Fasold
This is an attractive climbing bean with decorative mauve flowers, followed by bumper crops of long, round, stringless, mid green pods with superb flavour, produced over a long period. It is early cropping, and pods are slow to develop seeds.
Sow indoors in trays or 7.5cm pots, or alternatively direct sow outdoors. Indoors, fill trays or pots with good seed compost and sow seed 4cm deep. Place the container in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag and place at 18-21C until after germination, which takes around 7-10 days. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few days before planting out after all frost risk has passed. If sowing direct outdoors, prepare the soil by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Sow once the soil has warmed sufficiently, 4cm deep, 15cm apart. Support with canes or netting. Hoe regularly and keep well watered especially when flowering. Mulch during dry periods.
