Primula - Drumstick Mixed
This is a beautiful and distinct primula with large, round flower heads made up by scores of neat florets. It prefers a semi-shaded position but will do well in the border. The colours include snow-white, lavender-blue, lilac, deep blue and startling rich carmine. It is ideal for early spring flowers, spring-flowering pot plants, bedding, and cool spots in the rock garden.
Sow spring to mid-summer or autumn on surface of good seed compost and gently firm. Seal in a polythene bag or cover with glass and place in a shady spot. Do not exclude light which is beneficial for germination. Keep soil damp but not wet. Germination usually takes 10-30 days at 15-18C, higher temperatures can prevent germination. Once most seeds have come up, sprinkle a tiny amount of sieved compost over the roots to anchor them. Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm pots. Grow cool and fairly moist and later plant out 23cm apart in the autumn where they are to flower in good soil and full sun. Grow cool and fairly moist and either plant out 23cm apart in the autumn where they are to flower in good soil, sun or part shade, or overwinter in a cold frame and plant out in spring.
