Campanula - Ramosissima Meteora
This is a quick and easy-to-grow annual bellflower. The bushy, dwarf plants become covered with distinctly veined, star-shaped, blue flowers, 3-4cm across with pretty white centres. Meteora flowers over a long period and makes a truly stunning addition to a sunny border or container. Can also be planted in small pots, making a lovely gift idea.
Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills 30cm apart in well-cultivated soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Thin out seedlings to 30cm apart when large enough to handle. Alternatively, sow seed early in the year onto the surface of a good, free-draining, damp, seed compost and place at a temperature of 15-21C. Lightly cover the seed with a sprinkling of vermiculite. Germination will usually take 14-21 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 3cm apart. Flowers throughout summer with some light deadheading.
