Cucumber - Vega
This variety is perfect for outdoor growing, ideally through black plastic for warmth and weed suppression, and to keep the fruit clean. It produces a good crop of 10-12cm mini fruits throughout the summer if picked regularly. The fruits are crunchy, bitter-free with a good cucumber flavour. Plants are powdery mildew tolerant.
Sow mid-April to early June under glass to transplant outdoors. Sow seeds 2.5cm deep, in pots or trays of good seed sowing mix at 20C under glass or in a propagator. Protect emerging seedlings from direct sunlight to avoid scorching. Pot on individual seedlings into 7.5cm pots of sowing mix and keep barely moist to avoid stem rot. Maintain a temperature of about 20C. Plant out 75 x 75cm apart once frost risk has passed. If space is limited, train up supports/netting. Do not remove male flowers as outdoor varieties need pollination.
