Celery - Martine
This is a well-coloured, very winter hardy selection of the traditional English trench celery. It produces long, heavy, thick, green stems with a lovely reddish basal tinge. Use crunchy stems and fine leaves in winter salads, soups and stews. It is also a winner for the show bench.
Sow from March to April for table use, or in January for the showbench. Sow seed on the surface of a good, free-draining, moist seed compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at a constant temperature of around 15C until after germination, which takes up to 21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 5cm pots or modules. Harden off before planting out from late May into prepared trenches 45cm wide and 3cm deep, spacing plants 38-45cm apart. Gradually fill the trench as the plants grow.
