Penny Royal
Penny Royal is a ground-hugging plant, with strong, pungent, peppermint-scented leaves. It is best used sparingly as a seasoning for stuffings, sauces, stews or with game. Dried leaves add a subtle flavour to stewed fruits. Fresh leaves make a refreshing, aromatic tea.
Sow seed on the surface of a good seed compost. Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at 20-25C until after germination which takes 21 days. Keep compost on the dry side at all times. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for a few days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm apart.
