Chicory - Brussels Witloof
This popular variety is used for winter forcing. It produces thick stemmed leaves for use in salads when they are blanched.
Sow the seeds direct in situ from May to June and thin the plants out to 20cm spacing. They are ready to harvest from October to December. They can be forced at room temperature for about 3 - 4 weeks by excluding light. Sow in modules from February to April. To get good germination the seed requires a temperature of over 18C. Can be transplanted under cover or outdoors.
