This variety is one of the earliest butterhead varieties on the market. A 19th century heirloom variety, May King produces good yields of mid or pale green lettuce with closed heads and leaves which are slightly tinged with red.
Sow from April onwards in modules ready to plant out from late spring onwards, with spacing of 35cm apart. Sow small quantities of seed at intervals to get a continuous harvest.
