Lettuce - Vailan (Winter Gem)
This is a 'Little Gem' type lettuce for winter greenhouse or frame. It produces sweet, succulent well filled-hearts.
Sow indoors. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow 0.5cm deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-21 days. Transplant, from October to April when large enough to handle, to large pots or growing bags in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame, spacing 15cm apart. Always handle by a leaf, never by the stem. Keep well-watered. Regular sowings, made every two or three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest from October to May.
