Pea - Carouby de Maussane
Tall growing mangetout variety with attractive purple flowers. It produces large pods up to 11cm long with good sweet flavour. The pods can be cooked whole. This varity originates from Maussane near Avignon in France.
Make a drill about 12-15cm wide and 4-5cm deep, sow seeds 5cm apart throughout the drill, water and then fill in. Support as seedlings appear, as it will grow upto 2 m tall. Regular watering is essential once the plants are in flower and pod. As well as sowing direct, they can also be sown in old guttering in the greenhouse for hardening off, and planting out to get an earlier crop. It is ideal for successional crops and germinates at 5 - 25C.
