Giant Vegetables - Show Time

Giant Vegetables Going to the shows

This is the time of year that the Giant Vegetable growers have been waiting for. After all the hard work it’s the time of reckoning.

For me it has been a difficult year with pests eating plants, the marrow plant not setting flowers, and the giant onions getting botrytis in August. I have a few things left and my long runner bean which weighed 200g and was long enough to get a 4th at Malvern Autumn Giant Vegetable Show. My beetroot was just over 20lb and the Cucumber about 12.5lb

Overall I am happy and it gets me planning for the next year.

The Malvern Giant Vegetable Show 2024 had an incredible 13 world records set for the longest, tallest and heavies vegetables. Its difficult to pick any specific ones out but leading grower Peter Glazebrook with his heaviest sunflower (7.046kg) and longest leek (1582mm). Kevin Fortey continued his collection of world records heaviest Tromboncino (5.306kg) , longest aubergine (410mm) and tallest cucumber (6497mm) You can see more of his growing expertise on Giantveg.co.uk

The most dramatic moment of the show was the arrival of the giant pumpkin grown by the Paton brothers. They take devotion to growing (and cost) another level to get to the incredible pumpkin weights. You can follow this link to see their seasons progress. Sadly, their efforts to beat the world record fell just slightly short of 2748lbs needed but 1198kg (2642lb) is very close. Its only a matter of time before these expert growers smash the existing records.

I will finish with a load of photos, if you want to see all the Malvern Autumn Show results take a look on this link
