Liquorice - Glycyrrhiza Glabra

This is a common variety and is used as a source of liquorice commercially. The flower is a pale purple at the end of the summer. It grows best in well manured soil to get good root growth, and is frost hardy. Its roots can be harvested in autumn and the plant replanted.

To get best germination, pre-soak the seed for 24 hours in warm water, and sow at room temperature in a greenhouse in spring (can also be sown in autumn). Germination can be slow from seed. Pot up the seed when large enough to handle and grow on.
