Giant Vegetables - The Season Starts
My name is Nick, one of the directors of JustSeed Limited. I love growing all sorts of plants including Giant Vegetables and my National Collection of Cheiridopsis which will feature as a separate occasional blog.
Over the past few years I have been learning to grow giant vegetables with various levels of success. I shall regularly share my progress in the coming season. As you will see, it is a journey of challenges with successes and failures. The fun part of the journey is not knowing often until the last minute what the outcome with be. For the past 3 years I have entered the Malvern Autumn Giant Vegetable show where the best growers produce incredible results. My personal aim is to beat a few of my own records and hopefully one day have something that will compete with the very best.
Last years personal results included:
Giant Onions 12.5lb and 11.5lb ( 5th Malvern Giant Vegetable Show)
Longest Runner Bean 31 inches ( only 28 inches still in good condition for Malvern Show )
Giant Marrow - 100 lb
Long Chilli - 38cm
Giant Tomato - 2.5lb
Giant Cucumber - 12lb
Carrot - not at all giant!
Potato - also not a giant!
The season starts early with the Giant Onions being planted on 22nd October. As always lots of experiments are going on with both seeds and onion pips planted. More details on how I grow will follow.
