July Update from the Giant Vegetable Patch

July Update from the Giant Vegetable Patch

Here is an update from the Giant Vegetable Patch.

Giant Onions

The journey is coming to a dramatic end. The damp weather has caused lots of problems. One of the key things with giant onions is to do everything to avoid the onset of any type of botrytis or rot. It all ended in the middle of July. The onion when it was trimmed back still managed to reach 10.25lb but sadly will not be able to go into a show. There is one left but it is much smaller and is already slowing down so I don’t expect it will come to much.

Giant Beetroot

I have 3 plants which are continuing to grow really well. They seem to be enjoying this weather. I keep them well watered and add a small regular amount of seed. The leaves have generally stayed in good condition. I have no idea how the root is compared to last year. Another 6 weeks to go!

Giant Cucumber

I have been growing the cucumber in coir and adding a feed mix from Canna. The plants look strong but they have yet to set and fruit. As usual I have a bit of mildew creeping in. I tend to put up with it as I don’t want to use chemicals.

Giant Runner Beans.

This has always been my best crop in the past. This year a very cold snap seemed to stop them in their tracks. Let's see what the next few weeks bring but the plants don't look very strong.

And finally

If you enjoy seeing Giant Veg here are a couple of growers follow:

Peter Glazebrook

Peter is a top grower of a wide range of vegetables and many world records.

Ian and Stuart Paton

These guys have been growing Giant Pumpkins for years, they are going for a world record of over 2749lb (1247kg)  Watch their progress this season.
