Even in the depths of winter we bring a little of the garden indoors. We decorate our houses with evergreen trees and holly wreaths and garlands above the mantelpiece. On the windowsill we may have an exotic array, poinsettias with their vibrant bracts, bowls of fragrant hyacinths. The flower-heads of amaryllis often appear too heavy for the stalk to hold up.
