“February is the border between winter and spring."

Buy your seed potatoes to ‘chit’ somewhere cool, in the light, it’s still too chilly to plant them out. Prepare the ground for your onion sets – they are available now but wait for the soil to warm up before planting out.

If you own an heated propagator start sowing your sweet peppers, chillies and aubergines indoors, as they need a long growing season. Chillies need a minimum of 25C to get going, likewise aubergines. Tomatoes need a minimum of 10C to germinate if you have enough room. Otherwise wait until next month and populate a sunny windowsill with your favourite varieties plus new ones to taste. Otherwise sow seeds of hardier varieties in pots on the window sill such as kale, broad beans, cauliflower, onions from seed for planting out when big enough.

If your soil is warm (stick your thumb in for a minute or two!) sow broad beans and peas, quick growing salads, sweet peas and salvias.
