"Nature has undoubtedly mastered the art of winter gardening"

What Seeds to Sow in January 2025

"Nature has undoubtedly mastered the art of winter gardening and even the most experienced gardener can learn from the unrestrained beauty around them."

-  Vincent A. Simeone

Today is mild, but the forecast promises snow, gale-force winds, and other wintry delights. It’s not the best time to be active in the garden, but there are still tasks I can tackle. Far from being a dormant season, January offers plenty to keep me busy in the garden. It’s good for my health and wellbeing to get outside when the weather holds, enjoy the fresh air, plan ahead, and engage in some satisfying physical gardening.

January is the perfect time to take a good look around and make thoughtful resolutions about what I want to change, plant, or improve in the coming year. With my notebook in hand, I jot everything down so I can refer back later. This notebook is handy throughout the year, especially when I visit gardens or go on tours—I can easily note plants and ideas that catch my eye. Here at JustSeed Ltd we are adding an extended range of new varieties to try alongside all-time favourites.

Sowing Early Veg Seeds

When the weather limits my gardening activities, it’s uplifting to start the year feeling proactive. A great way to do this is by sowing seeds for vegetables and flowers that will produce an early spring crop. Radishes and certain salad greens are ideal. If you’re wondering which seeds to sow in winter in the UK or what I plant in January, here are a few ideas.

Where I live, in North Wales, makes a big difference in what I can sow. Whether you have access to a warm growing space, like a heated greenhouse, also plays a role. However, some seeds can be sown in a cold greenhouse or cold frame. Don’t forget to adjust sowing times depending on where you live as this will determine planting out times too (after the last frost).

Veg seeds for January

Broad beans, Carrots -early such as Amsterdam Forcing , Cauliflower , Cabbage, Onion sets, Peas, Kale, Mustard, Corn Salad – lambs lettuce

Start these varieties in a heated propagator as they will need some heat to germinate. Aubergine, Onion seeds, Shallot, Chilli peppers.

Flowers to sow in January in heated propagator include antirrhinum, begonia, geranium (pelargonium), gloxinia, lobelia, salvia and verbena. Some perennial plants, such as anemone, auricular, aquilegia, hollyhock and kniphofia, can also be sown at this time.
