New varieties of vegetables and flowers are enticing. Although it is exciting to look through the seed catalogues whilst sat in front of the fire, hold back from sowing anything until mid Feb.

If you can get out on dry days now is the time to clear the ground, dig out perennial weeds. Cover bare ground with mulch to keep weed free. Cut back old and manky foliage but don’t forget the birds. If seed heads are still full leave them on for the finches.
Lift those winter blues, being outside and uncovering the bulbs peeking through the decaying leaves. Or tracking down that elusive scent – Sweet Box sarcococca confuse, Witch Hazel hamamelis, daphne lurking in a secluded corner. Or if the weather is not conducive to going bring that perfume indoors with a bowl of hyacinths.
