Rich Autumn colours and harvests a delight for the eyes

Red and orange and yellow and green…  Autumn brings rich fruitfulness, bright benevolence and a glow in the heart. Autumn brings a feast for the eyes as well as food for the stomach. Berries and drupes such as blueberries and plums provide purples, apples and pears come in shades of green, brown and a variety of reds. A brown egremont russet, my favourite apple, a richly stripey cox or a bright red discovery or katy ready for the picking.

Leaves start to turn in a myriad of ways: hues of greens and yellows changing to oranges and golden browns in the leaves of the beech trees; yellows and reds on the maples; orange, purple, yellow and red on the acers.

Other examples are Cornus - vibrant red, orange or yellow stems and leaves which will last throughout the winter. Euonymus alata changing to pendulous deep vibrant reds.

Nuts

Sweet Chestnuts, horse chestnuts hoarded by children and squirrels, acorns and rich brown beech mast. Food for animals and some birds. Fresh walnuts, chestnuts and cobnuts to enjoy.
