Grow Chives

Chives are straightforward to grow from seed and don't need much attention once established. Start them in pots or sow outside in spring, keep young plants watered and you'll soon have a clump that can provide fresh leaves for years.

Sow

Sow from March to May in pots, modules or directly outside once the soil has warmed. Sow a small pinch of seeds together, cover with around 0.5–1cm of compost or soil and keep moist while they germinate.

Plant & Grow On

Plant established seedlings outside in sun or light shade, leaving around 20–30cm between clumps. Chives are equally happy growing in the ground or in containers near the kitchen door.

Pick & Divide

Snip leaves near the base once plants are established and they'll grow back. Older clumps can be divided every few years to keep them vigorous and give you extra plants for elsewhere in the garden.
