Beetroot is easy to grow, but there’s more choice than the familiar round red roots. We’ve picked a few reliable favourites for different situations, whether you want an early crop, something dependable for the vegetable patch or a variety that’s a little different.
Best for Early Sowing
A dependable traditional beetroot with good resistance to bolting, making it particularly useful when you want to get an early crop underway. It produces smooth, round, deep-red roots with good flavour.
Best for Baby Beetroot
A versatile variety producing smooth, round, dark-red roots with a sweet flavour. Pablo is particularly good harvested young as baby beetroot, although you can leave the roots to mature for later harvesting and storing.
Best Golden Beetroot
Choose Boldor when you fancy something different from traditional red beetroot. Its golden roots brings a different colour to the vegetable patch and give you a useful alternative for salads and cooking.
Best for Something Different
A distinctive beetroot with striking pink-and-white rings and a pleasantly mild flavour. It’s easy to grow and a lovely choice if you want something a little different from the usual round red beetroot.

Beetroot is straightforward from seed and doesn’t need much attention once established. Sow little and often for a steady supply of young, tender roots through summer and into autumn.
Sow about 2cm deep, spacing seeds roughly 5–10cm apart. You can sow directly outside or start an early crop in modules under cover. Keep the soil or compost moist while the seeds germinate.
Thin seedlings to around 7–10cm apart, or leave them slightly closer if you plan to harvest young. Keep weeds down and water during prolonged dry spells. Beetroot growing in containers will need checking more regularly.
Start pulling beetroot once the roots reach a useful size. We like them from about golf-ball size upwards, when they’re sweet and tender. Harvest the largest first and leave smaller roots to carry on growing.
