Courgettes are easy to grow and incredibly productive, but there are plenty of varieties to choose from. We’ve picked a few reliable favourites for different situations, whether you want a compact plant for a container, a dependable cropper or something a little different.
Best for Beginners
A straightforward green courgette that's a great choice if you're growing them for the first time. Green Bush produces loads of dark green fruits.
Best Traditional Choice
A well-known courgette producing glossy, very dark green fruits with the classic shape most of us expect. A good choice if you want a traditional courgette.
Best Yellow Courgette
A bright yellow courgette that makes a colourful change from the usual green varieties. The fruits are easy to spot beneath the foliage too. Good harvest.
Best for Something Different
One Ball produces unusual round yellow fruits instead of the traditional long courgette. Pick them while they're young and tender for a colourful crop.

Sow one seed per small pot about 2cm deep from April onwards. Keep somewhere warm until they germinate, then move the seedlings into plenty of light. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.
Sow about 2cm deep, spacing seeds roughly 5–10cm apart. You can sow directly outside or start an early crop in modules under cover. Keep the soil or compost moist while the seeds germinate.
Harden plants off before planting outside after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position with rich soil and allow around 90cm between plants. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water regularly once plants are growing strongly and feed when flowering and fruiting. Pick courgettes while they're young and tender, ideally around 10–15cm long. Keep checking — they can turn into marrows remarkably quickly.
