Cosmos are easy to grow and brilliant for filling borders with flowers right through summer. We’ve picked a few varieties for different situations, whether you want tall plants for cutting, something compact for pots or a flower that’s a little different.
Our Favourite
A lovely cosmos with soft pink flowers and deeper rosy centres that really stand out above the feathery foliage. Daydream has that relaxed, airy look we love in a summer border.
Classic Variety
A classic tall cosmos with elegant pure white flowers held above lovely feathery foliage. Sensation Purity is a great choice for adding height to borders and as a cut flowers.
Best for Pots & Smaller Spaces
A more compact cosmos. Sonata Mixed produces plenty of colourful flowers on shorter, bushy plants, making it a great choice for pots, and the front of borders.
Best for Something Different
We love this striking cosmos. Velouette produces rich red blooms splashed and striped with white, with plenty of variation between the flowers to make every plant a little different.

Cosmos are straightforward to grow from seed and quickly get going once the weather warms. Start them under cover in spring or sow directly outside later, then give them plenty of sunshine and don’t overfeed. Keep picking or deadheading and they’ll flower for months.
Sow seeds from March to April in pots or modules, covering them lightly with compost. Keep somewhere warm and bright while they germinate. You can also sow directly outside from late April or May once the soil has warmed.
Harden young plants off before planting outside once the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position and give taller varieties plenty of room. Pinching out the growing tips can encourage bushier plants with more flowering stems.
Water while plants establish and during prolonged dry weather, but don’t overfeed them. Pick flowers regularly for the house or remove faded blooms to encourage the plants to keep flowering well into autumn.
