Which Lettuce Should I Grow?
Not sure which lettuce to grow? Compare our recommended lettuce varieties for pots, summer crops, winter growing and cut-and-come-again leaves, with practical growing advice.
Best for Winter Growing
A hardy butterhead lettuce that's ideal for autumn sowing and growing through the cooler months. With a little protection, Arctic King can give you useful winter leaves and an early crop the following spring.
Best for Cut-and-Come-Again
A loose-leaf lettuce that's perfect when we want to pick a few leaves at a time rather than harvest the head.
Beautiful Baby Leaf
A modern lettuce producing plenty of small, evenly sized leaves from a compact head. We love growing this variety for its tender leaves for salads and its colour and looks make it suitable for any border.
Heritage Choice
A lovely butterhead lettuce with attractive green leaves flushed with bronze-red colour. It's a good choice when you want a traditional lettuce that looks as good in the garden as it does freshly picked in a salad.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Growing Lettuce
Lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to keep cropping through the season. Sow small amounts regularly, keep plants watered and you can enjoy fresh leaves for months.
Sow
February to August
Plant Out
March to September
Harvest
April to October
Position
Sun or light shade
Sow little and often
Sow small batches every 2–3 weeks rather than the whole packet at once. This gives you a steady supply of fresh lettuce and avoids everything being ready together.
Keep plants growing steadily
Lettuce prefers fertile soil that stays reasonably moist. Water regularly during dry weather, especially as plants begin to form heads, for tender leaves and good growth.
Harvest while leaves are fresh
Pick loose leaves as you need them or harvest headed varieties once they feel firm and well filled. Young leaves are particularly tender and full of flavour.
