Grow Your Own Sage

Sage is an easy perennial herb that's well worth finding a sunny corner for. Once established, one plant can provide aromatic leaves for years and needs very little attention. It grows happily in borders or containers and particularly likes a sunny position with well-drained soil.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Growing Sage

Sage takes a little time to get established from seed, but once growing it's a tough and undemanding perennial. Start seeds under cover in spring, plant into a sunny, well-drained position and avoid keeping established plants too wet.

Sow March - May
Plant Out May - June
Harvest May to October
Position Full Sun

Sow

Sow from March to May in pots or modules, covering the seeds lightly with compost. Keep somewhere warm and bright and keep the compost gently moist while they germinate.

Plant Out

Plant outside once seedlings are established and the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. Sage also grows very well in containers.

Pick and Prune

Pick leaves as you need them once plants are established. Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants compact and bushy, but avoid cutting hard back into old woody stems.
