Sweet peas are hard to beat for summer flowers, especially when you add their wonderful fragrance. There are plenty to choose from, so we’ve picked a few varieties for different situations, whether you want beautifully scented flowers, long stems for cutting, something for a container or simply something a little different.
Best for Fragrance
A lovely choice as this mix gives you a range of beautifully fragrant flowers in different colours, making it ideal for filling the garden with that classic sweet pea perfume and for cut flowers

Single Colour
A lovely choice if you prefer a single colour rather than a mixture. One of many individual colours Leamington produces beautiful lavender-blue flowers.
Best for Smaller Spaces
A shorter-growing sweet pea that's a great choice when you want plenty of flowers without the height of traditional climbing varieties. Knee High works well in containers.

Sweet peas are easy to grow from seed and can be started in autumn or spring. Give them a sunny position, something sturdy to climb and keep picking the flowers through summer to encourage plenty more.
Sow seeds 2–3cm deep in pots or deep modules. Sow in October or November for an early start, keeping plants cool and protected over winter, or sow from January to April for a spring start.
Keep seedlings somewhere bright and cool and pinch out the growing tips once they have several leaves to encourage bushier plants. Harden off spring-grown plants before planting outside.
Plant into a sunny position with rich soil, spacing plants around 15–20cm apart. Give them canes, netting or another sturdy support, water during dry weather and keep picking the flowers to encourage more.
