HELP ME GROW

Grow Upwards

When space is limited, look upwards. Climbing vegetables and flowers can make use of fences, walls, trellis and other supports, giving you more growing room without taking over the ground.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Growing Upwards in Small Spaces

Growing upwards is one of the simplest ways to get more from a small garden. Give plants a strong support from the start, keep an eye on watering and guide young stems where you want them to go.

Sow Spring to Early Summer
Plant Out After frost for tender crops
Harvest Summer into Autumn
Position Sunny & Sheltered

Put the Support in First

A trellis, canes, netting or sturdy frame is much easier to install before the plant gets going. Make sure the support is strong enough for a mature plant, particularly when it's carrying fruit or a heavy crop.

Guide as They Grow

Don't wait until plants have become a tangled heap. Gently guide young stems onto their supports as they grow and use soft ties where needed. Keeping growth organised makes harvesting much easier too.

Use the Space Below

One of the advantages of growing upwards is that you can still use the ground below. Quick crops such as salads and radishes can often be grown around the base while the climbing plant uses the space above.
