Aquilegia - Caerulea
This is possibly the most beautiful Aquilegia of all. With glorious light to deep blue flowers 2-3in across sometimes fetching bi-coloured with white. It is an excellent border perennial, grand for cutting, in bloom for several weeks and will grow in sun or light shade. It flowers from late spring to early summer. Height: 30-35cm.
Sow spring to mid-summer in a free draining seed compost just covering the seed with compost. Germination can take from 1 -3 months at 15-21C, to speed this up seal in a polythene bag after sowing and leave in a refrigerator. Inspect regularly and remove if any start to germinate in the fridge. Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm pots. Move to a cold frame or plunge the pots up to their rims in a sheltered site outdoors and plant out in autumn, 12in apart in moist well drained soil, sun or part shade.
