Nicotiana - Sylvestris
This imposing half hardy annual has stout spikes bearing a cascading head of fragrant 3½in long white blooms. It grows to a height of 90-120cm (36-48in) making it an excellent subject for the border. Occasionally a short lived perennial in a warm sheltered site.
Sow on the surface of a good free draining seed compost from late winter to early spring. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-20 days at 21C (70F). Do not exclude light which is beneficial to germination.
Transplant when large enough to handle and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 1-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 6cm (24in) apart in sun or part shade on rich well drained soil.
