Green Manure – Grazing Rye Seed
Grazing Rye (Secale cereale) is a fast-growing green manure crop ideal for protecting and improving your soil over winter. Not to be confused with ryegrass, this hardy variety develops an extensive root system that helps break up compacted ground, improve soil structure, and boost fertility.
Perfect for autumn sowing
Grazing Rye will suppress weeds, prevent nutrient leaching, and add valuable organic matter when dug in during spring. It grows well on a wide range of soils and thrives in slightly acidic conditions.
Key Features:
Botanical name: Secale cereale
Type: Hardy annual green manure
Sowing period: August–November
Dig-in time: Spring, before flower heads form
Soil preference: Slightly acidic to neutral soils
Benefits: Improves soil structure, prevents erosion, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter
Planting tip
For best results, sow evenly over prepared ground and rake in lightly. Cut down and dig in before flowering to avoid tough stems and to release maximum nutrients back into the soil.
