Rosemary - Rosemarinus Officinalis
Rosemary is an evergreen perennial herb that also makes a perfect plant. It is known by its scientific name Rosemarinus officinalis, The densely foliated shrub can reach a height of 100-200cm but can also be clipped to the desired size. Its distinct flavour is a wonderful herb that is popular with lamb and can also enhance other meat dishes and roasted vegetables. Rosemary prefers well-drained soil in a warm, sheltered position. Pick sprigs as required, which can be dried. It should be kept clipped to promote bushy growth.
Sow in trays from March onward. The seeds should be surface sown and covered with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite as they need light to germinate. Germination can be slow and the ideal temperature is 18C - 24C. Plant the seedlings up when the plants are large enough to handle and can be planted out after hardening off.
