GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Growing vegetables in containers is mostly about choosing the right size pot, keeping an eye on watering and giving hungry crops enough food. Start with good compost and a sunny position and you can grow a surprising amount in a relatively small space.
Match the container to the crop. Lettuce and radishes need relatively little room, while tomatoes, cucumbers and other larger plants need considerably more compost. Whatever you use, make sure excess water can drain away.
Pots dry out much faster than garden soil, particularly during warm weather. Check them regularly and water thoroughly when needed rather than giving plants a small splash every now and again.
Some vegetables need more feeding than others. Quick crops such as radishes need very little, while tomatoes, cucumbers and chillies will benefit from regular feeding once they're established and producing crops.
