How to Grow Asparagus Crowns

Plant asparagus crowns in early spring as soon as soil conditions allow.

Prepare a deep, weed-free bed enriched with plenty of organic matter. Dig trenches around 20–25 cm deep, spacing crowns 30–45 cm apart, with 45–60 cm between rows.

Spread the roots carefully over a small mound of soil in the trench and cover lightly. As shoots grow, gradually fill in the trench over several weeks.

Keep plants well watered during establishment. Do not harvest spears in the first year. Light harvesting can begin in the second year, with full cropping from the third year onwards.
