Runner Bean - Achievement Merit
This is a British re-selection that gives an improved form of the ever popular Achievement. Runner Bean Achievement Merit gives heavy yields of long, smooth, slender straight pods that have exquisite flavour which are produced in abundance from these RHS Vegetable Collection seeds over a long season. This red-flowered variety produces tender beans, ideal for use in the kitchen or on the show bench and are particularly attractive in the garden.
Sow seeds in mid-April in pots indoors, plant out from end May. Sow seeds 5cm deep in a well prepared soil. It is best to erect supports before planting. Allow 2 plants per pole placed at 15-20cm apart as a structure, or grow up netting or a 4 cane wigwam. Allow about 1 metre between wigwams. Water copiously during dry weather, particularly when flowers are forming, as roots must never be allowed to dry out. Mulch heavily with compost/grass cuttings. Pinch out once plants have reached the tops of supports. Grows in any fertile soil in full sun.
