Alyssum - Golden Queen
This attractive hardy perennial forms dense mounds of evergreen, silvery foliage that contrast boldly with the spring clusters of golden flowers. Alyssum 'Golden Queen', also known as Aurinia, is vigorous and showy; just perfect for a low maintenance, ground cover display in borders and rockeries. Height: 30cm. Spread: 45cm.
Sow alyssum saxatile seeds from late January to July at 15-18C, on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Keep the soil damp but not wet and do not exclude light. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 10-30 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Acclimatise alyssum plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting out in autumn or early spring, at a distance of 45cm apart in full sun on fertile, particularly well-drained soil.
