Verbascum Chaixii Yellow
One of the few truly perennial species of mullein, this variety has sulphur-yellow blossoms with purple and red filaments, which bloom profusely on long flower stalks in mid- and late summer above its rosettes of hairy, jagged-edged leaves that are semi-evergreen. These plants are well-adapted to cottage gardens, gravel, and rock gardens, or even naturalized areas. This is one of the better behaved Mulleins that may gently self-seed but rarely becomes a nuisance.
Sow the seeds onto a good soil-based compost, covering them with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. They can be sown at any time, and although germination can be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C, we sow most seeds in an unheated greenhouse and wait for natural germination as many seeds wait for spring before emerging regardless of when they are sown. Spring sowing will obviously give them a full season of growth.
